The Asset Map below is meant to help tell the story of aviation in South Florida and showcase the large cluster of aviation industry businesses including MROs, parts companies, training facilities, airports, FBOs, carriers and OEMs.
Few people may know it, but South Florida was one of the first centers of international commercial aviation in the country with seaplanes moving mail between the U.S. and the Caribbean in the 1920s. Prominent Miami-based airlines such as National, Pan Am and Eastern Airlines opened worldwide traffic to and from South Florida. They may have folded but only to help create one of the largest Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) cluster in the world.
Aviation pioneer Glenn Curtiss laid the groundwork in the early 1900s. He held the nation's first-ever pilot's license, designed over 300 planes and parts, and trained young World War I pilots, among other things. Among South Florida residents are famous aviation names such as Charles Lindberg who worked for Pan Am after his famous flight across the Atlantic. Juan Tripp, the founder of Pan Am, Bud Maytag of National Airlines, Eddie Rickenbacker a World War I aerial ace, part owner and president of Eastern Airlines, Amelia Earhart; the first female pilot, took off from Miami Municipal Airport on her worldwide journey and the list of famous people goes on. Leading aviation/aerospace companies have known about South Florida for years and so should you. The South Florida Aviation Hub is a public/private partnership to grow, attract and retain aviation/aerospace businesses, capital investment and industry talent to the region.
